how to find it:
About a ten-15 minute walk from Lincoln station, by way of the High Street, and the very appropriately named Steep Hill, and then Bailgate. The pub is on the corner of Exchequer Gate, on the right.

Conveniently located just a stone's throw from Lincoln's cathedral one way, and its castle the other way, the Magna Carta (named in honour of the copy of that document that found a home in Lincoln) has a location that should enable it to soak up the city's tourist trade. The rather higgledy-piggledy arrangement of the pub - being located on the side of a hill means it has small rooms and areas at several levels - works highly in its favour, adding to the sense of intimacy in what is actually a fairly sizeable pub. There are a few tables and chairs outside on the (flat part of the) street, too, although watch out for water dripping from the numerous hanging baskets overhead. The pub is as good for tea or coffee, or evening meals, as it is for a drink, while remaining identifiably a pub. Still, we think, for all its positive points, the Magna Carta's location has let its management become a little complacent; on our visit service was, while friendly, somewhat lackadaisical, and not a single real ale was available, despite the presence of several hand pumps. All in all, it's not a bad place, though, and one that seems to attract locals in uphill Lincoln as well as tourists.
