how to find it:
Waltham Abbey has no train station (the nearest is Waltham Cross, from where there are regular buses) but from the main market square in Waltham Abbey, Silver Street is over in the south west corner (over the zebra crossing) and the pub a sort way down on the left.
One of the more charming looking pubs we've reviewed, the diminutive size and ancient tiling make this look like a wonderful, well preserved back-street pub. It doesn't quite live up to this initial promise, however, but is still fine for a drink. Hidden away off the main Waltham Abbey thoroughfare, this is a traditional McMullen's pub with a two bar arrangement and the usual good compliment of their own ales. On our Sunday visit, the public bar was filled to capacity with locals of all ages (and all brands of sportswear) watching some sporting fixture or another, which spilled out into the back yard. Consequently we drank in the small but virtually empty Saloon bar. We would've expected to a more enjoyable visit than we experienced, so we'll probably try another visit soon, perhaps during the week.
