picture of Duchess
With its former incarnation as a run-down postie haunt a very distant memory now, the Duchess (formerly 'of York') managed to survive long enough in this unloved bit of industrial SW8 to be taken over by some bright young things a couple of years ago, who've timed it pretty well to capitalise on the long-awaited regeneration of the area. It has benefited from a sympathetic and smart refurbishment, creating a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Décor flutters between differing eras, from Georgian through to the 1960s; notice the different types of chandeliers and wallpaper used on opposite sides of the pub. It could've been a mess, but actually works well, helping accentuate the feeling of grandeur inherent in this old Victorian pub. Speaking of grandeur, if you're a fan of industrial architecture, you'll be in seventh heaven here, as it boasts unrivalled views of Battersea Power Station, especially from their excellent roof terrace. There are usually two or three ales on tap (although two were off on our last visit), but the real aficionados will go for the great range of whisky and vodkas, available at a decent price - and we always like a pub with a whisky of the month! With friendly service, live music, a good pub quiz and great food, this is certainly a very relaxed place but they'd do well to make more of an effort clearing up the empty pint pots and plates; it wasn't busy on our visit but they did seem to languish. Nonetheless, the Duchess is a place we enjoy visiting whenever we can.

Eating at the Duchess ... we last ate here on 24/04/2008

Upmarket, small but reasonably priced menu. Snacks included a British Cheese platter and a charcuterie selection. Sunday Roast £8.50 while the burgers at £8 were excellent.
