how to find it:
Hastings station: head down the hill from the station towards the sea front, but when you get to the turn for the sea, carry straight on and walk though the shopping area, under the subway. Carry straight on and, after a short while, take the left fork into the old part of town. This is George Street. Walk along George Street for a while and you'll soon find the pub on your left.

Superficially, it certainly looks the part, a higgledy-piggledy half-timbered building in an old, narrow street just off the sea front. The interior certainly complements the exterior too, with its exposed beams, real fire and rambling layout as it climbs the hill from the sea front. The beer is good - it's a Shepherd Neame pub - and the food is good honest pub grub and it's a friendly place too, with friendly bar staff and plenty of events on for the locals. But, sadly, the olde-worlde charm has been augmented with 21st century pub accoutrements and there's the rub. We don't mind the disco lights (for the events) nor even the twinkling lights of the fag and fruit machines, but we couldn't ignore the small TV screens blaring out the same five mediocre pop songs from one feeble-minded, cash-strapped, satellite music channel or another (they're so similar we couldn't remember which one it was). The culture clash was too much, after only one drink we left - mocked, for the third time in thirty minutes by the strident tones of Leona Lewis.
