The Devonshire Arms is an excellent traditional local's pub. There's a great selection of beers and the landlady is clearly proud of her wares; quite right too, as they were appropriately very well-kept. There's a lively front bar, plus a more cosy red velvet seated back room, which leads off to a charming grassed back garden. We were exposed to some pretty cheesy 1980s pop music, but we couldn't make out if it was coming from the good-looking retro jukebox or from the staff's personal collection. If you lived on one of the pleasant streets around the Castle Road district of Bedford you'd be happy to call this your local, while it's also recommended if you happen to be visiting the area.
