Like water flowing downhill to find its level, the students who live in the bedsits on the hilly streets around Sharrowvale Road, perhaps also propelled by gravity, almost inevitably end up here in the Porter Cottage at some point in the evening. You can't blame them either, it's got everything you need for a night out down the pub - a couple of beers on the hand pumps, wines, spirits, brightly coloured pre-mixers, gaming machines, a quiz machine and a rather good jukebox. It's also easy to find. In term time, it's hard to get a feel for the size of the place, such is the crush (especially at weekends), but when the academic season is over, you suddenly realise it's a much bigger place than you first thought. It's been like this for years - if you're not student, you probably won't like it when the shiny-faced youngsters are in town - but for rest of the year you'll find it's a decent enough local.
