how to find it:
The easiest way to find the Butchers Arms is to travel from Fownhope (route is signposted for Woolhope)and continue along the road, past the Crown Inn and down the hill. The pub is on your right when the road flattens out again.
One of two pubs in the small village of Woolhope, the 14th-century black and white timbered Butchers Arms is usually the quieter neighbour to the perennially popular Crown Inn. The Butchers, part of which was actually a butcher's shop many moons ago, is split into two narrow rooms which run along the length of the bar, with a very low beamed doorway separating them. Many heads have taken a bump here so maybe not wearing high heels would be a good plan, especially for 6-foot-6 men. Visitors sampling the food menu account for a large proportion or the trade, though there are always a few locals at the bar. Larger parties can be accommodated in the separate restaurant. There is a small garden area next to a stream at the back, but you can't beat a seat next to the fire on a cold winter's evening. If the small car park at the front is full, a much larger space is hidden the other side of the pub.
