picture of Eagle and Child
A truly ancient pub, the Eagle and Child has been a public house since 1650 and still has the low beam ceilings and mullioned windows of that era. More recently a conservatory was added to provide light and extra seating. It also has a rich literary history. While on faculty at Oxford, J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis met at what they affectionately called "The Bird and Baby" and invented a new genre of literature over pints of ale.

Today it is still a favourite spot for faculty, students and fans of Tolkien and Lewis. Oxford views tourists as a pestilence, and you will find that attitude here. Service is slow and surly. But to be fair the constant inundation by gawking fans must be tedious. On tap: Deuchars IPA, London Pride, Adnams Broadside and Brakspear Bitter for the real ale drinkers and Old Rosie Scrumpy Cider for those who prefer cider.

Eating at TheEagle & Child ... we last ate here on

They Eagle and Child offers a large menu of British classics, but the service is slow and the food is poor quality. Best stick to drinking.

As a longtime Tolkien fan, I had to visit The Eagle and Child when we went to England last year. We had lunch there, and had good food at a reasonable price. All the servers were friendly, and thought they were busy, the service was fine. Oh - and the beer was great as well!
