The Champion of the Thames, Cambridge  

Often in this world there seems to be a ceaseless craving for change, but some things are better left alone. The Champion of the Thames, with its traditional wood panelling and etched windows, is one such example. This small two-roomed pub, named after a 19th century rower who won a race on the aforementioned Thames, is a lively, friendly local which is worth a trip out of your way to visit. It attracts a wide variety of punters, probably including some who have been punting, and we were made to feel as welcome as any regular. The landlord even turned the glasses to ensure the brewer's emblem faced our seats at the bar. There are three ales, including two regulars from Greene King, with Leffe and Stowford Press cider among other thirst-quenching options. While it gets our vote at any time of the year, this would make the perfect winter pub with its nooks and crannies, and a real fire. Or in summer visit perhaps the most compact outside space we've seen, consisting of one small table.
