how to find it:
Head for the sea shore, you can't miss it.
If you've ever visited Whitstable or you're a regular
cinemagoer you probably won't have missed the Old Neptune. Situated about as on the beach as it is possible for a building to be, it's the first thing you see as soon as you get to the shoreline. The pub commands a great view of the Thames Estuary and the north Kent coast and, in sunny weather this fine aspect, is further enhanced by the handily placed tables in front of the pub. Unfortunately, this also proves to be the pub's Achilles heel. During the week it's an OK local (a couple of hand pumps with so-so IPA and Pride) and a few other gas-propelled beverages, but on warm summer weekends, it is overwhelmed by the folks from round about and the weekenders from The Smoke - and it just can't cope. It takes ages to fight through the crowds to get served and if you want food, best bring a picnic. This state affairs is as unavoidable as it is understandable, short of wrecking the place and creating a giant beer hall, it's hard to imagine what one could do. Pity.
