picture of Chequers Inn
The Chequers Inn is exactly the kind of pub you hope to find in a small village. It's not a 'nice, but corporate chainy experience', like that offered up by innumerable McMullen and Greene King country-style pubs, but an actual, real pub. Already quite attractive from the outside (even if the font is reminiscent of the titles from Prisoner: Cell Black H), once through the low doors you find a wooden beamed, traditional pub. There are four distinct areas, with an eating focused bit at the back and some couches towards the front. Signs above the bar let you know you can ask about both home made cards and home made pickles. Or how about the truly confusing "pickled egg in a packet of crisps" for 70p? We stuck instead to one of the three ales available. Food prices are eminently reasonable and the quality better than some wannabe gastropubs we know. Our first visit on a late Saturday afternoon found it very quiet here, but our return visits (usually on a Sunday) have found it pleasantly busy, mainly with people enjoying a bit of lunch. If you hanker for traditional style pubs with very hospitable service, then the Chequers Inn is certainly worth considering. Personally, we love it here.

Eating at the Chequers Inn ... we last ate here on 07/12/2008

Good sized and very reasonably priced pub grub menu. The Roast Chicken (£5,95) was succulent and flavoursome, but the Yorkshire pud was rather undercooked on our second visit. Meanwhile, while the Pigeon Pie (£7.95) encased in what seemed to be a home-made shortcrust pastry was excellent. Desserts are pretty good too, priced at £2.95
