picture of Smiths Bar and CafeLike many towns, Colchester is a mix of the good and the bad. Quaint medieval streets and ugly ring roads, Norman churches and soulless shopping centres. Smiths is a bit of a relief, being just a stones throw from some of Colchester's less inviting bars (often filled with gel-haired boys and micro-skirted girls). Set in an attractive 1930's building, complete with a hairdresser upstairs, Smiths offers cocktails, wine lists and premium bottled beers to a slightly older, more laid back crowd. It's not a big place and it gets full quickly, but service is attentive and professional, even if our simple lunch order took a while to arrive. Certainly one of the better places in the immediate area for the evening crowd, it's an equally good place for lunch if you don't want to support the nearby multinational chains.

Eating at the Smith's Bar & Cafe ... we last ate here on 12/07/2008

Good range of sandwiches and baguettes served lunchtime. Good value, too.
