picture of Newman Arms
This one hasn't changed in ages, which is no bad thing. It's still a good pub, with decent beer and a very mixed clientele - some of whom have been propping the bar up here for quite a few years. It's nice to see that some things don't change. The beers on the taps when we were in last were Black Sheep and London Pride; we had the Black Sheep and a nice drop it was too, well kept and poured. The excellent staff are convivial enough and they pour a mean pint. There is an upstairs Pie Room, which does what it says on the tin - this is an excellent place for pies, probably some of the best in London and worth a look. It's not a huge place, and when we were in last, the punters were spilling out onto the pavement to take advantage of the nice weather - and that was about 9.00! We'd still say it's worth avoiding at going home time, because it gets so busy, but judging by our last visit, they're not rushing home. We'd still say it's a sanctuary in Fitzrovia, but you may have to go in the afternoon to get a quiet seat and a pint.
