picture of Tobie Norris
When you think of new pubs opening, they often seemingly involve Wetherspoons taking over a carpet shop or an anodyne bar and restaurant opening in a development of luxury flats. So it's an absolute pleasure to have discovered the Tobie Norris, which opened at the end of 2006, wining a CAMRA award in the process. Previously used by the Royal Air Force association, the building actually dates back to the 13th century and is named after a 17th century owner who used it as a bell foundry. Consideration has been used to make this a fantastic pub and the multi-levelled, multi-roomed property proved to be the perfect foil for a sympathetic and elegant refurb. From the open fireplace next to the bar and the ancient vaulted attic room to the attractive beer garden, there will be somewhere to ensconce yourself for an afternoon with one of their 5 ales and perhaps a wood-fired pizza. Special mention must also be made to the toilets which seem to date back to the 1930s - if the Bakelite handles are anything to go by - but are some of the nicest we've ever seen. A classic pub in every sense (apart from it's age, that is).
