picture of Flying Horse
After donkey's years with very little change, apart from maybe a thicker layer of dust on top of the picture frames, the Flying Horse had a major update a couple of years ago. Well, that may be pushing it a bit, but out went all the pictures of horses, jockeys and the dear old Queen Mum, allowing the walls to see daylight again It even appeared that someone had used a paint brush on the inside of this place. What the owners have managed to do is update it (some new furniture and a large TV) without losing track of what made it work before. This is like a traditional pub in an area where city bars devoid of personality rule the roost, but the continued presence of six real ales serves to illustrate that no major changes are afoot here. They have retained the old food counter at the end of the bar and can rustle up a hot roast sandwich for you at lunchtime, while there is an upstairs function room available with darts and a pool table. Also, there's a fairly decent jukebox in which to spend those six-figure city bonuses. Perhaps, though, the volume could be turned down on occasions.
