how to find it:

Leave Liverpool Street station at the Broadgate end (not Bishopsgate) and turn right at the large steel sculpture. Go up the steps past the ice rink and walk through to Sun Street. Cross Sun St. and walk through the pedestrianised area (now Crown Place) along Clifton St., across Worship St., through the tiny square where there is usually a load of bikes and scooter, and take the right fork down Holywell Row and the pub is at the other end at the junction with Scrutton St.

picture of Old Kings HeadThis firmly locals pub has had a makeover - though perhaps one better suited to Goths than trendies, as the blood red walls and dark stained wood evoke a certain atmosphere. It's tempting to surmise that the walls were painted to match the leather sofas, but that's probably not fair. And, despite the fact it's surrounded by designers and other trendy types, this is still very much a locals' pub. If you fancy a pint without the crowds and don't mind a few stares, it does the job. The fact that horse racing was on the big screen instead of the cricket says something about the clientele, but they seem to keep the regulars happy.
