picture of Morpeth Arms
The Morpeth is one of Young's more traditional pubs nowadays. It was redecorated a couple of years ago and the layout was altered to provide more drinking space, but substantially, this pub is as traditional as pub needs to be for most visitors. Naturally, Young's excellent beers are served on the five hand pumps and there's a suitable complement of wines and spirits to accompany them. Being close to the Tate Britain, The Morpeth attracts a lot of visitors during opening times and this is probably what mars the experience somewhat for us. It's not bad, just unatmospheric,. On the other hand, there are few pubs in this locale and if you're looking for rest, refreshment and a little sustenance, you can do far worse.

Youngs' refurbists have just destroyed this pub. It was so lovely - quiet Victorian with nice wooden tables and Axminster carpet, Victorian bar, all very elegant. Youngs have torn out most of it and Ike-ised it. I turned round and left, never to return.
