This rather large pub is really two pubs. The front is the original pub, with its cosy booths a fireplace, while the back is a later addition with a large central bar and a balcony area for sitting and watching the crowds. As it's directly over Camden's Underworld Club (they're both tied together) it can get very full if there's a band on, and consequently rowdy and rambunctious. Saturday nights can be a heaving mess and it can be six deep at the bar and so loud you can't hear yourself think. They do have bouncers on the door, but there was little sign of them turning anyone away - well, we got in. In such a prominent position it attracts the hordes of tourists and weekenders, as well as a fair few Goths and rockers. If this isn't your idea of fun, you'll find it less uncomfortable during the day than at night - but you might prefer other more genteel watering holes. Look upon it Camden's answer to Disneyland and you're almost there.

The balcony is closed to accommodate the bands and their entourages on Sunday nights when there's live music. It was a jumble of satchels, guitar cases, groupies and LOTS of empty beer bottles.

At lunchtime, this was a quiet spot with a colourful crowd and a fine, helpful barman. At 10pm it became a raucus romp where you could see all forms of life go by. Watching the spectacle from the balcony was quite fun.
