picture of New Rose
It's hard to believe that almost every pub along Essex Road was once a rough local's boozer and the New Rose is no exception, having received a makeover a few years ago. The outside is something of a delight, with original green tiling and hanging baskets complimented by tables sporting chequered tablecloths. Inside, the moody interior features lots of exposed brick, candles and uplighters, but they kept the old gantried bar - the look is warm and inviting, rather than industrial. The toilet signs however, titled George and Mildred are probably a joke lost on anyone under 30. On the drinks front, there is an above range of lagers and usually three ales to choose from; our last visit found a well kept selection from smaller breweries, which was good to see. DJs make their presence felt towards the latter part of the week, but the volume is such that conversation is still possible. Essex Road has its fair share of bars and pubs, but the New Rose seems to have struck the right balance between authenticity and pretension. Indeed, their modest self description of being "just another pub" somewhat sells them short.

Eating at The New Rose ... we last ate here on 27/1/2006

Simple, effective and not too expensive. Good pizza and sandwiches. No chips however - they serve portions of roast potatoes instead.

GREAT PUB! Full of beautiful people not noticing or caring they are beautiful. Just an all around great pub and great place to be. They show football and what not and used to have great food and the best pizza in town, but truth be told, it is terrible now and they seemed to have gone the way of microwave packaged food or something. That said, who cares, great pub, just don't eat the food.
