We visited the West Riding Refreshment Rooms on the occasion of a 38th birthday and on the premise that we had seen it a few weeks earlier on "Oz & James' Drink to Britain" and that it looked a bloody good pub. When we got there first impressions were that we were right. Built into the station in a grand old building of local stone this couldn't say "olde worlde" enough if you added 12 "e"s on the end. Inside it's the same, spread over some three rooms the décor is comforting and cosy, log fires, large tables for groups and quite corners for couples. The point of the pub is the ale and the choice was amazing, so many real ales from all over the country. They are rightly proud that the Beeb chose them as an example of a real ale pub. The crowd, for a mid February day, was big and happy and everyone seemed to be drinking in the atmosphere of the pub. It's memorable too as this is where we tasted the best beer we have ever tasted, "Hit & Run" from Northern. And as the birthday boy said, this was one of the best pubs he can remember... and one of the best birthdays he can't.
