picture of Cartoonist
An odd pub slotted in the base of a office tower block, the Cartoonist offers nothing out of the ordinary other than the eponymous cartoons. This is hardly surprising given it is surrounded above and on all sides by law offices and supporting businesses - conservative is the watchword here. It's just a modern pub with pine floors, a downstairs bar cum function room, food, fairly loud music and a reasonable pint. It's really not one to go out of your way for, not even for the cartoons. It has the big advantage, especially on a Friday lunchtime, of being one of the few places in these parts where you can get a seat in or out, even on a glorious day - although the adjacent street seems to be permanently dug up, and chat can be hard with incessant pneumatic drilling in one's ear hole. The menu is pretty functional, but reasonable value (around £4.50 for burger, chips and salad). However, this is tempered by the drinks prices: you won't get much change from four quid for a lager - even Foster's. And Adnam's standard bitter is pushing £3.50 (and not especially well-casked, even at that price). What justifies this policy in what is a very average City pub, we really can't fathom.
