picture of Elm Tree
Cambridge has its fair share of excellent pubs, but even against this high standard, the Elm Tree is somewhere in the top set. Sat on an attractive back-street within eyesight of another two very good watering-holes, this Banks and Taylor's pub gets just about everything right. First off there's the ale. Expect around ten on the pumps at all times, all from smaller independent breweries (aside from three which come from Wells & Young's). There are so many ales, the scant selection of lager hardly gets a look-in. The décor is traditional but not old fashioned, with a lighter, brighter front section making way for a more cosy back area. Everywhere old bottles of ale line the shelves. Service is friendly and efficient, while it's clear landlord is enthusiastic about his pub and the beer he sells. We'd suggest coming here as part of a pub crawl, but if we were honest that might prove tricky; once you're ensconced here there's little incentive point to move on too quickly.
