From Colchester Town station, cross the roundabout and head down the main round. At some point you'll want to take a right (either Whitewell Road or Stanwell Street) and then turn left down Saint John's Street. The pub is on the right just before the junction with Headgate.
We suspect this review is going to be atypical of the place, but it doesn't seem suited to bright summer days. Unfortunately we visited it on such a day (what are the chances, eh?) and, even though it was a Saturday afternoon, it was virtually empty. Inside it seemed a little close, almost dingy, albeit not in a disagreeable way. The conversation and attitude of the few stalwarts who were present hinted that there would be a certain character and atmosphere to the place on other occasions. We suspect it would come into its own on other occasions and may well deserve a better rating; but its probably not one for those determined to eek out every meagre drop of British sunshine.
