Formerly a solid, local's pub, a recent refit has seen things being altered here, with the pool table - and we think some of the bar furnishings - removed. An old L-shaped Fuller's boozer, there's still a decent pub at its core, but there's just the sense its wings have been ever so slightly clipped since the refit. It feels a tad more formal than before - especially now there's a baby grand piano in the corner. Even with that addition, we're not too sure they'll be too many singsongs at this one.

Agree with above and not with editor, have not been to one of the “events” as of yet but just nipped in for a mid week pint and the pub seemed smashing. A welcome addition to Hoxton.

I think the editor of fancyapint has missed a trick with this one. I was there last night and it was great. You don't come across pubs like this very often. 4 live bands played. All really good. The pub was 'nicely' busy. I ordered two tasty pizzas for friends - we enjoyed a few drinks and the atmosphere was great. The refurbishments don't distract from the fact this is a pub with a lot of history and character. I just hope that not too many people discover this little gem....

A fantastic reburb - this pub was a tired old mans pub with good beer but not a lot else. It still does a really decent pint of Pride, and I'm told there are acoustic nights, a quiz with live piano afterwards and they had a BBQ there last weekend in the sun. What more could you want from a backstreet boozer in Hoxton?!

What an excellent pub, newly refurbished in February 2008, and the new bar is now back to it's splendid Victorian glory, with a cosy fire, huge and comfortable leather sofas, oak tables, and a great bar. The Fuller's London Pride and ESB are truely excellent, and well looked after, and the G&V also offer a good range of lagers and a nice wine list. Definately worth a visit.
