picture of Harlequin
This pub, being next to Sadler's Wells, used to be the haunt of the backstage techies and members of the orchestra escaping from the theatre. There even used to be a phone from the backstage area. Sadly, with the demolition of the old theatre, some of that character seems to have gone, but it hasn't really changed otherwise. Never mind though, it's friendly enough and far enough off Islington's main drag to be very civilised, and the last refurb didn't hurt it, either. It's got regular ales on the taps, including Timothy Taylor's Landlord and Black Sheep, and the food looks good too - seasonal home-made pies are definitely something to look forward to. Combined with a welcoming landlady, friendly regulars, board games like Jenga and Connect 4, great music and occasional DJ nights and this one is definitely worth going out of your way for - and practically perfect if you're going to see a show at Sadler's Wells.
