picture of Dignity
After a few changes in previous years, the Dignity has managed to settle down nicely and successfully answer the problem of how to make this shop conversion a desirable place to drink. Their approach to make it stylish and trendy - but still down-to-earth and comfortable - seems to be the right one. Couches and armchairs are interspersed with butcher's block tables and there's low level subtle lighting to add a warm glow. As you might expect there's a good wine list, along with a selection of premium lagers, Strawberry Fruli and London Pride on tap. A decent pub food menu is served late and was reasonably priced. A pleasant one for a daytime drink, the sight of the DJ decks (and a large amount of vinyl) in the corner suggests things get a bit livelier come nightfall. What with the remodelling of the Catcher in the Rye down the road a couple of years back, this little patch of Finchley has been lowered into the box marked 'trendy'. Well I never.

well worth a visit, despite the appearance externally, good beer, good bar staff, nice mix of people, and at the weekend if you can catch Big Chief do try to - they are excellent, I defy you to have a spring in your step afterwards.

I've been to see Big Chief every month now since January, and listened to a superb evening's music every time, plus excellent beer. Spread the good word!

Things have changed a lot since that was written. I went there on Sunday night (13th Jan 2008) and saw a really first class band called Big Chief - a brilliant mix of jazz, blues, African Township, reggae, etc. If what they played is typical of the standard of live music here, then this is a pub to spread the word about. And the 'pile of vinyl' seems to have disappeared. Friendly staff and good beer too.
