Once a pub used primarily as a place for a quick drink before heading off into town, having slipped under the wheels of the M&B refurbishment juggernaut, they've been pulling out all the stops to hold onto the upmarket drinkers of 'East Finchley Village' for a couple of years now. Decked out in various styles of furniture, from faux Louis XVII chairs, through to art deco lamps and kitsch 60's sideboards, it's certainly very stylised; indeed, if the bar were removed, it would look like an antique furniture shop. There's a number of good real ales and continental lagers on tap, alongside the nicest beer garden in the area. Also added is an well made menu at reasonable prices (indeed we note many of the unbranded M&B have lowered their food prices recently). With the renovated Bald Faced Stag up the road providing vying for the same demographic, this pub needs to increase the staffing levels - a ten minute wait at the bar and the uncollected empties on our last visit didn't really make the right impression.

We have been coming to the OWL over Christmas holiday for years & have watched it's many transmutations but we love it anyway we can get it. Once the Bald Faced Stag went sports bar then restaurant we loved the OWL even more. Thier chips are the best ever & their othe gastropub dishes are tasty, too. It is right on the tube stop & within walking distance to the house where we stay. AAA+++

Just the rudest barman I have ever encountered in any London pub. To be fair he dealt out his unpleasantness to all who entered without fear or favour, but nevertheless I won't be coming back.

I've been to this pub a couple of times but I think I’m going to give up now. There is an excellent selection of beers and ales (which drew me in the first place) but the attitude of the staff and quality of the food is questionable. On all three occasions that I've tried to order food from here, the majority of the already meagre menu "is off" and what food was available took ages to turn up and was either cremated or just looked a general mess (‘Rustic bread’ turned out to be squares of bleach-white cheapo stuff!) This really could be a comfortable, decent pub if they provided some staff that actually didn't seem to mind working there, gave up on the food and stuck to what they are good at – serving quality ales.
