This pub's been closed for the best part of two years now and it's latest incarnation on reopening is something of a shock - it's gone upmarket. And gone is the operative word. Gone is the sticky carpet. Gone are the cosy booths and pub tables. Gone are the tellys. Gone is the massive bar in the centre of the room. Gone... well, you get the picture. It's altogether more an eating place with drink, though not necessarily in a bad way - they apparently brew their own beer, Beehive Ale and have a selection of beers from Greenwich's Meantime available too. We say 'apparently', as it was off when we were in last - we'll have to pop in another time to try it. Interestingly, the wine list is all French - not a new world wine in evidence. The menu's an interesting cross of traditional and modern cooking with a selection of mezes and Thai fishcakes (very nice) amongst the choices. Don't get us wrong, the old Beehive had it's good points, but this one has its merits, too. Though getting asked if you're eating or drinking when you come through the door could be a bit off-putting, particularly as the drinkers appeared to be exiled to the back corner behind the bar. That said, the staff are very friendly and table service is a very continental way to be.
