The Walrus & Carpenter, Fenchurch Street  

Nowadays, the Walrus and Carpenter is a Nicholson's pub and, thankfully, when they took it over they sorted out the ground floor arrangement so that it's all one room. Previously, you could have arranged to meet friends at the pub and been blissfully unaware of the others' presence in the unconnected room. So what what else have they done? The usual extensive and well-kept range of Nicholson's ale is now on the hand pumps, there's a champagne bar downstairs and the Lewis Carroll bar and dining room created upstairs. The service is friendly, there's plenty of choice and there's decent pub, grub if you need solid sustenance. The clientele is typically City and the atmosphere is solid British pub - it won't excite a young crowd, but at the same time it's not depressing and staid. It's all very Nicholson's which is a generally a good thing and, in an area where there aren't many pubs to speak of, it's a very good thing.
