Take a left out of East Finchley tube. Walk up the hill to the traffic lights and take a right onto Fortis Green. Pub is about a seven minute walk on the left.

When the Alexandra gave itself a sprucing up a few years ago it managed the difficult task of updating itself nicely without ruining the fact that, at heart, its a proper local pub. So what you have here are elements of an art-deco theme very much in keeping with the original building, mixed with a subtle music theme. Photos of Elvis and Johnny cash are mixed with posters of Reading Festival line-ups. The jukebox too follows this theme with a pretty comprehensive selection, including the rather ironic inclusion of a Kinks album. None of this means its the exclusive preserve of trendy East Finchley residents and our visit found a good mix of locals, with after-workers, couples and bar propping regulars all filling the place nicely. The staff are great too and happily providing a table service when they see your drink is getting low. Already a good, solid pub in its own right, now that the Clissold Arms over the road has become a monochrome gastropub, the Alexandra is all the more important for the area.
