how to find it:

It's a bit of a walk from either station, but here goes. From Highbury and Islington station, walk down Upper Street until you come to the junction with Barnsbury Street, on the right hand side of the road, just past the Town Hall. Turn right into Barnsbury Street and walk along it, crossing Liverpool Road and you will shortly see the pub on your right, just past the kink in the road. From Angel, head north up Liverpool Road, walking up the left hand side of the road, until you eventually get to Barnsbury Street. Turn left into Barnsbury Street and you will shortly see the pub on your right, just past the kink in the road.

picture of Drapers ArmsWell, the Drapers Arms got the Evening Standard pub of the year award in 2003, but, had Fancyapint? been dishing out such awards, we're afraid it wouldn't have made our top five. Whilst pretty top-notch food (though reports vary), a sophisticated, reasonably priced wine list and a decent bunch of beers on the hand pumps (Speckled Hen, Courage Best and a guest) might be on offer, to us, the place just isn't a pub. Informal dining is not at the heart of the pub experience in our view, but it's the main reason people come here. As a drinking-only customer, you don't get made to feel like a second class citizen, like you can in some food-oriented establishments, but if the menu doesn't interest you, you do feel out of place. It's a nice place, with nice décor, nice flower arrangements and nice (if sometimes slow) service. By all means come here if you're hungry, but if it's a pint and conversation you're after, there are other, more apposite places. Gastro it may be, but pub it isn't.
