picture of The Auld ShillelaghOne review in a local magazine from 2002 described the Auld Shillelagh as "becoming one of the hippest bars in Stoke Newington", complete with "Mediterranean-style beer garden." A refurbishment there may have been, but this description does it a disservice. The pub itself is actually the most traditional boozer in Church Street and even if it's only been going in it's current guise since 1991, it fills this role extremely well. The staff are considerate and witty, the Guinness is excellent, and the atmosphere has character - at whatever time of day you saunter in. And there's a strong chance you'll have your pint brought to your table for you. The Shillelagh is a pub that's true to its instincts and, whether you want to go and read the paper, chat with friends or blether with the locals, there's a welcome for you. Highly recommended.
