The Army and Navy is not a bad pub per se, just a bona fide unreconstructed locals pub; a bit dingy, but otherwise harmless. That said, it suits the locals perfectly - from the live music nite (sic) on Saturdays to the 6ft projection screen showing the 3.55 race from Newmarket. About a mile away from the Army and Navy is another former Truman's pub, the Rose and Crown in Church Street. Both have almost exactly the same interior; from the dark wood panelling, the ornate ceiling, even the signs for the toilets are identical. However at some point a few years ago whereas the Rose and Crown was caught up in the gentrification of Stoke Newington, the Army and Navy was on the wrong side of the tracks. Caught in between council estates on the wrong side of Newington Green, it goes without saying location is everything.
