picture of Shakespeare
It would be fair to say that most keen pubgoers would be more than happy to have The Shakespeare as their local. Set in a street which looks a little like a shabby Primrose Hill, you're unlikely to find this place by chance amongst the maze of roads south of Stoke Newington. Run by the Remarkable Restaurants group, who own a handful of great pubs in nearby North London, this pub has everything you might want for a pint or two. It's a given that there's good beer - and indeed a selection of Fullers and Ridley's ales on tap can usually be found, along with Litovel for the lager drinkers. There's also enough original features give an air of elegant character missing in many post 1980's refurbishments, without it feeling like a museum piece. Add to this a friendly mix of youngish locals and you begin to realise back street boozers this satisfying are rare breed indeed.
