This pub seems to have it all in one package: a dazzlingly ornate interior which was originally a part of the old Great Eastern Hotel (some say it was a banqueting hall, some say a ballroom, it all depends who you ask); and being Wetherspoons, it has a large range of decent, well-priced beer (especially for the City) and cheap pub grub. Unfortunately, nothing is ever quite as it seems. During the week, it does get very busy with braying City commuters and slightly lost tourists - though after about 1.00 it's fairly quiet - making it difficult to get a drink, much less drink in peace. We have to give the staff credit, though, they do a pretty good job and do their best in the circumstances. Weekends make it one to avoid, once you've found the weekend crowds and thrown in a soupcon of pissed footy supporters and you'll have a pretty close approximation of some people's idea of hell.

good selection, regular guest beers
