Bear & Staff, Leicester Square  

A friendly enough pub on Charing Cross Road, which given its proximity to Leicester Square is seldom quiet. There's nothing that remarkable about it, other than it fits the image for many visitors to London of what a pub is - real ales, traditional pub grub - yet it also has a fair number of more regular punters, perhaps somewhat surprisingly. It's location does make it a great place to meet up near the National Gallery or theatre land all around it; it's fairly obvious on Charing Cross Road and hard to miss. And, as it's part of the Nicholson's chain, the beer is well-kept and there's a good variety of it, as well - try their 'sup before you tup' scheme to taste the beer before you buy it, if you're uncertain what you're getting. Go on, give it a go - it's a touch above your usual West End pub - but that's enough.
