how to find it:
From Essex Road station, turn onto Essex Road and veer left, away from all the other Essex Road bars and take the third right, Northchurch Road. At the end, turn right onto Southgate Road and the pub will soon be on the right.
It was quite clear from the scattering of well-to-do-locals enjoying themselves that they were rather grateful for an upmarket place to eat and drink in an area where upmarket pubs are a rarity. Stuck on the far east edge of Islington, the Northgate is housed in a grand-looking Victorian building, ironically situated on the busy Southgate Road. Inside, the large space appears to be an earlier version 1.0 gastropub, with an essentially bland, forgettable arrangement of dark wood chairs, tables and wooden floors. Much of the food on offer pushed the £10 mark with ease and even if it looked good there are ultimately more intimate places in Islington to enjoy food at that price. With good pubs less out of the way than the Northgate, if you're not a local the reasons to venture here are probably limited.
