picture of Railway Tavern
Until recently, the Railway Tavern was one of the last blokey boozers in Crouch End - a testament to big screen footy and cooking lager; we could only imagine what it might have been like in its heyday, before the station alluded to in the name closed. However, after a change of ownership and a much needed revamp it's searching for a new, younger, more affluent demographic. Housed in a nice 1930s building, a large handful of original features have thankfully been retained, including a nice fireplace and the wooden panelling. Where the pool table once stood you can now find bar skittles, which may or may not be for ironic purposes. There's usually a couple of ales on tap (the Everard's Tiger was in good nick) and those in search of lager will find an above average selection. Food is also pretty good and we've eaten here a few times now; sandwiches, main meals and tapas style snacks are order of the day and won't disappoint. There is also some entertainment on offer, usually in the form of live music on a Sunday night. Despite all the positives, it never seems to get as busy as other pubs in the area, which is rather odd, as its arguably one of the better places to have a drink.

Eating at TheRailway Tavern ... we last ate here on 18/10/2009

With a few eating visits under our belts now, we're seldom let down. The £5.95 Club Sandwich and the £6.25 Spicy Sausage and chorizo baguette were both excellent, as is the beefburger. Sunday Lunch is also preety good, and it's served until 9.30. Overall you'll find classic pub staples, for between £7.50 and £10, plus a tapas snack menu.

The Railway Tavern is a beautiful old 1930’s pub that has had many of it’s original features lovingly restored by it’s new owner, who is passionate about restoring old boozers to their former glory, hence the lack of TV,s fruit machines and pool tables. The place has a wonderful warm and cosy atmosphere in the winter but is light and airy in the summer. The food is all home cooked by our very talented New Zealand chef, Meryce who, by the way, does a really fantastic Sunday lunch. We have a decent wine list and offer a good range of draught lager, bitter and cider. The beer garden has been re designed and replanted and is a lovely place to soak up the sun with a good cold beer The staff are friendly and courteous and even though the bar can get very busy especially towards the end of the week it is very rare that you have to wait very long for a drink. In short The Railway Tavern is a great place to meet friends and enjoy yourself and is the best bar in Crouch End. If you would like to book a table or an area of the bar please call us on 0208 348 3396. We are able to cater for private paries.
