As this pub's named after a
19th century philosopher and thinker, you might be forgiven for expecting it to be some sort of cultural nexus. We suspect it primarily earned its name because his
"auto-icon", or preserved body, is on display in a glass case in the South Cloisters of the main building of nearby University College London. The pub's proximity to UCL and University College Hospital means it does often attract students and medicos, as well as local office workers, but that's no reason to be put off. This pub has a pretty impressive and well-kept range of guest ales on the pumps and what we sampled on our last visit is anything to go by, it's worth trying to work one's way through the whole lot. They do food during the day, standard pub grub, which is adequate but unlikely to win Michelin stars. If you've been pounding the streets of London, looking for that elusive (electronic, round here) bargain, you should find this pub a welcome respite.
